THE VENICE OF THE NORTH
This programme features music by North German composers who were working in during the second half of the seventeenth century. Some of the music here can also be heard on our most recent CD entitled Buxtehude & Co which was released in May 2007. Joined by a violin and cornetto, or two violins we play music by composers such as Matthias Weckmann, Dietrich Buxtehude, Johann Theile and JP Krieger whom all wrote and published pioneering instrumental works between 1650 and 1700. These works not only pushed the technical boundaries of the players but also played a crucial role in the developement of chamber music composition techniques and musical form in general, helping forge critical links between the glorious Rennaisance style and the fully developed Baroque style of more well known composers such as JS Bach and Telemann.
