The beautiful sound of Adam Woolf's sackbut playing is very much to the fore of a recent CD by the Caecilia-Concert. "Treasury of a Saint" is a delightful mix of 17th century music from across Europe. The cornett, sackbut, dulcian and harpsichord/organ play a mix of virtuosic solos, duets and trios and with relatively close microphones, the subtleties of the playing is much more in evidence compared to the majority of sackbut recordings

On this CD he takes the lead in a number of items including the 1621 sonata "La Hieronyma" by Giovanni Martino Cesare, in which he demonstrates a great deal of expressive phrasing and rhythmical supplety.

Adam's soft sound blends superbly with the woody dulcian for a charming duet in the form of Buchner's Sonata IX. The dancing variations are full of invention and played with poise and shape.

I was also particularly impressed by the sheer personality of the Wouter Verschuren's dulcian playing in his account of a virtuosic set of variations by Bertoli.

With 75 minutes of delightful chamber music the disc is great value so have a listen for yourself here. I look forward to hearing more from the ensemble.
